CUT PEONIES

Select a perfectly clean vase and fill it with cold, fresh water. If using flower food, mix it thoroughly before introducing your stems. Because peonies are heavy drinkers and highly sensitive to bacteria, ensuring a pristine environment is the first step toward long-lasting blooms.

TRIM & CLEAR THE STEMS​
Using sharp, clean gardening snips or shears, trim each stem at a sharp 45-degree angle to maximize water absorption. Remove any lower foliage that would rest below the water line; submerged leaves will quickly decay, compromising the clarity of the water and the overall health of your peonies.
ASSISTING THE BUDS
For most peony varieties, selecting buds in the marshmallow stage will help ensure the longest vase life. Most double peonies are best cut when the buds feel soft and pillowy, while single peonies perform best when harvested in a slightly tighter bud stage. If your peonies seem tightly closed, a gentle rinse under lukewarm water can help dissolve the clear, sticky sap that occasionally prevents buds from opening.​
