POTTED PEONIES

PLANT PROMPTLY​

We recommend planting your peony as soon as possible. While it may remain in its nursery pot for a short period, peonies establish most successfully when planted without delay.

​

If you are unable to plant immediately, keep the pot outdoors in a sheltered location with partial sun and consistent moisture. The soil should remain lightly moist, never completely dry, and pots should never be left standing in water.

CHOOSE THE PERFECT SITE​

Peonies flourish in open, sunny positions with fertile, well-drained soil. A location receiving full sun for most of the day, ideally 8 to 10 hours or more, will encourage stronger stems and abundant flowering.

​

Avoid planting too close to trees or large shrubs, where roots may compete for moisture and nutrients. Mature peonies require space to develop their naturally elegant form, so allow approximately 36 inches between plants.

​

Most importantly, choose a site with excellent drainage. Peonies deeply dislike wet feet, particularly during winter months, and prolonged sitting water may lead to root loss.

We do not recommend landscape fabric, stone mulch, or plastic sheeting around peonies, as these materials can inhibit airflow and natural soil health.

PREPARE THE SOIL

​Peonies are remarkably adaptable and generally require little amendment when planted in healthy garden soil.

​

In sandy soils, incorporate compost at roughly one part compost to three parts native soil to improve moisture retention. In heavier clay soils, amend similarly and gently raise or mound the planting area to improve drainage.

​

Raised beds are particularly well suited to peonies, especially where drainage is less than ideal. An additional 12 to 18 inches of rich, friable soil creates an excellent long-term growing environment.

NOURISH AT PLANTING TIME

​Although peonies are not heavy feeders, a modest application of bone meal or a balanced bulb fertilizer may be incorporated at planting time if desired.

​

Mix fertilizer evenly throughout the backfill soil, taking care that concentrated fertilizer never comes into direct contact with the roots, as this may cause damage.

TRANSITION YOUR POTTED PEONY

​Dig a planting hole slightly wider than the pot and approximately equal in depth. Carefully remove the peony from its container, disturbing the root system as little as possible. Position the plant so the soil level of the pot aligns with the surrounding garden soil. Planting too deeply may reduce flowering performance in future seasons.

Please note that Itoh peonies, due to their lineage as a cross between herbaceous and woody tree peonies, may naturally have woody stems visible above the soil surface. This is entirely normal and should not be mistaken for improper planting depth. Herbaceous peony roots, however, should remain properly covered and not exposed above the soil line.

Backfill gently, firming the soil lightly around the root ball to eliminate air pockets while preserving good soil structure.

​

While peonies may be enjoyed temporarily in decorative pots, they perform best when planted directly into the garden, where they may mature undisturbed over time.

WATER & ESTABLISH​

Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots. During the first growing season, deep watering during prolonged dry spells is essential while the plant establishes. Newly planted peonies should not be allowed to dry out completely.

​

Consistent moisture is especially important in spring during active growth, and again in autumn, when peonies quietly produce the roots that support next year’s blooms.
